Maroon Wins Annual Men's Swimming & Diving Intrasquad Meet

maroon team won nine of 17 events to defeat the gold team by a score of 173-127 at the Minnesota men's swimming & diving team's annual intrasquad meet on Friday.
Golden Gopher junior Al-American Terry Silkaitis paced the maroon squad by winning two individual events and helping two relays to victory as well. Silkaitis won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 45.58 seconds and followed with a victory in the 200 free in 1:38.81. Silkaitis swam the second leg of the 200 free relay that won in 1:24.04, then anchored the 200 medley relay to the victory in 1:30.14.
The gold team was led by sophomores Adam Mitchell and Travis Beckerle. Mitchell was a two-event champion, winning the 200 backstroke in 1:48.06 and the 200 individual medley in 1:53.39. Beckerle won the 500 free in 4:36.87 and the 1,000 free in 9:28.78.
Sophomore Mike Brown also won a pair of events for the maroon team, winning the 100 breaststroke in 57.33 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:04.53.
"We swam this meet at a quick pace, finishing all 17 events in just 70 minutes," said Golden Gopher head coach Dennis Dale. "So, our guys were tired by the end of the meet but still swam good times. I'm pleased where this team is at this point of the season."
The Golden Gopher open their regular season next Thursday, when they play host to Florida.
