Karl Erickson Earns All-America Honors in Shot Put

Minnesota sophomore Karl Erickson placed fifth in the shot put becoming the first Golden Gopher to capture All-America honors at this year's NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. The meet concludes on Saturday.
Erickson landed a throw of 62 feet, 10 3/4 inches to collect his second All-America honor in the event and of his Gopher career. The Zombro Falls, Minn., native also placed fifth at this year's indoor national championship. Nebraska's Carl Myerscough won the title on his final throw with an effort of 71-11.
Both Mitch Potter and Adam Steele advanced to Saturday's 400-meter dash final in grand style. Potter was clocked in 44.94 seconds in winning his semifinal heat. The time in one-hundredth off his career best of 44.93 he ran at the NCAA Midwest Regional and is the third fastest time in the world this season. Steele ran a career-best time of 45.17 in his semifinal heat and will be seeded fourth for the final. Minnesota has never crowned a national champion in a sprinting event.
