University of Minnesota senior Justin Mortimer was named the CollegeSwimming.com National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week this afternoon. He earned the honor after winning four individual events and a relay in a triple dual meet as the No. 6 Golden Gophers defeated No. 11 North Carolina, 239 -127, and Virginia Tech, 268-98. The award is selected by a panel of collegiate coaches.

Mortimer was named the Big Ten Conference Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday. This is the second National Swimmer of the Week award for Mortimer in his career. He also earned the award during the 2001-02 season.

Mortimer won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:06.19, the 200 individual medley (1:50.39) and the 400 individual medley (3:55.85). His time of 4:25.78 in the 500-yard freestyle was an NCAA provisional cut. Mortimer, a four-time U.S. Summer National champion and World Short Course Championships gold medalist, also swam the lead leg of the 800-yard freestyle relay that posted a winning time of 6:37.44.

Through two meets this season, the Milton, Mass. native has won six of seven individual events. His only second place finish came in the 400 IM at Florida to Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte.

The Gophers do not compete this weekend. They hit the water Nov. 19-21 at the Minnesota Invitational at the University Aquatic Center.
