MSD: Gophers Lead Minnesota Invitational After Day One of Competition

The Gophers started the evening well, winning the 200 free relay. The team of Terry Silkaitis, Neil Osten, Mario Delac and Igor Cerensek touched the wall first in 1:21.16. Wisconsin took second in 1:21.72. The Gophers took four of the top five slots in the next event, the 500 free. Travis Beckerle touched first in an NCAA provisional time of 4:27.02, followed by Sean McCaffrey in 4:28.44. Drew Knoechel (4:35.49) and David Moulder (4:36.41) finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Minnesota was equally as strong in the 200 individual medley. Adam Mitchell broke the meet record in a time of 1:48.28. Justin Mortimer finished third in 1:49.23 and Russ Payne was eighth in 1:53.27.
In one-meter diving, Shaun Kennedy, John Schmidt and Joe Skeate finished 4-5-6 for Minnesota. Kennedy finished with 486.70 points.
Wisconsin touched out the Gophers in the evening's final event, the 400 medley relay. The Badgers beat Minnesota by .08 seconds in a time of 3:19.34. The Gophers team consisted of Mitchell, Sean Kelly, Lucas Petersen and McCaffrey.
The meet continues tomorrow with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
