WSD: Gophers Finish Third at Georgia Invite

NThe University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team wrapped up competition at the Georgia Invite finishing in third-place. Host and No. 1-ranked Georgia won the meet totaling 1288 points. No. 8 California-Berkley was runner-up with 893 points, while the Gophers tallied 597 points. With the third-place finish, the Gophers defeated ranked opponents in No. 21 Notre Dame and No. 22 Florida State, who finished fourth and fifth overall. FSU finished fourth with 472 points, while Notre Dame was fifth with 272.

Valerie Tukey began the day with a 10th-place finish in the 1650 freestyle, clocking a time of 17:16.65. Katie Wind then followed with an eighth-place finish in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:02.12, while Heather Harris came in 16th with a time of 2:05.56.

The Gophers tallied 23 team points in the 100 freestyle behind the efforts of Katy Coombe, Sarah Perrot, and Kate Hardt. Coombe placed seventh and her time of 50.65 provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championship. Perrott added an 11th-place finish in a time of 51.36, while Hardt was right behind her in 12th in a time 51.42.

Minnesota placed three swimmers among the top-eight in the 200 breaststroke. Bridget McCoy touched the wall in third-place with a time of 2:17.49. Julia Quinn was right behind her with a fourth- place finish and a time of 2:18.19. Both efforts are provisional qualifiers for the NCAA meet. Abby Ruess chipped in a time of 2:20.65 to place eighth in the event, while Lauren Levondoski added a time of 2:25.85, finishing 16th overall.

Erin O'Neal had the 13th-best time in the 200 butterfly, finishing in 2:04.87. Sarah Solfelt was 15th overall with a time of 2:06.79.

The Gophers concluded the meet with another NCAA provisional qualifier and a third-place finish in the 400 free relay. Coombe, Perrot, Hardt and O'Neal added 32 points while clocking a time of 3:24.21.

In diving competition, Minnesota freshman Jessica Livingston captured her second meet title winning the platform event with a total of 419.15. Fellow teammate Holly Jakits was runner-up tallying 414.50 points.
