Men's Tennis Serves Iowa with 5-2 Defeat

The Maroon and Gold opened the conference dual with a 2-1 showing in doubles, winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. UM's top duo of Clay Estes and Avery Ticer dispatched Iowa's Sebastian Delgado and Walter Valarezo, 8-4, while Sion Wilkins and Aleksey Zharinov dropped Chaitu Malempati and Aaron Schaechterle, 8-5.
In singles play, the Golden Gophers took home victories at No. 1, 2, 4, and 5. Zharinov improved to 2-1 on the season at No. 1 with a 6- 4, 6-2 win over Malempati. At No. 2, Ticer dumped Delgado, 7-6 (5), 6-3, while Brian Lipinski earned a three-set victory at No. 4 over Walter Valarezo, 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-1.
The Maroon and Gold hosts Wake Forest on Friday, Feb. 13, at 6:30 p.m., at the Baseline Tennis Center. Minnesota then faces Virginia Commonwealth on Feb. 15, and Harvard on Feb. 16.
