Men's Tennis Edges No. 45 Oregon, 4-3

oThe 27th-ranked University of Minnesota men's tennis team edged No. 45 Oregon, 4-3, today in Eugene, Ore., to improve to 4-4 on the season (1-0 Big Ten). The Golden Gophers won the doubles point for only the third time this season and split the six singles matches to go 1-1 on their trip to Oregon. Minnesota was upset by No. 51 Georgia Tech, 4-3, yesterday.

The Maroon and Gold opened the dual with a 2-1 doubles mark vs. the Ducks in three close matches. Clay Estes and Avery Ticer downed Arron Spencer and Sven Swinnen at No. 1, while Chris Wettengel and Andres Osorio defeated Chris King and Markus Schiller at No. 2, both in 8-6 matches. Estes and Ticer are now 4-3 this spring.

In singles action, Minnesota picked up victories at No. 2, 4 and 6, including Brian Lipinski's three-set win. Lipinski dropped the opening set 6-2 against King, but rallied for two 6-2 wins to gain the victoy at No. 6. He is now 6-1 this season. At No. 2, Wettengel improved to 5-2 this spring with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Manuel Kost. Minnesota's final win came at No. 4 with Osorio's 6-3, 7-6 triumph over Schiller.

The Golden Gophers return home to face Fresno State on Tuesday, March 16 at noon at the Baseline Tennis Center.
