Men's Tennis Crushes Western Michigan, 7-0

swThe University of Minnesota wrapped up the nonconference portion of its 2004 schedule tonight with a 7-0 triumph over 55th-ranked Western Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. The 43rd-ranked Golden Gophers swept the singles matches and went 2-1 in doubles to improve to 7-7 this season (3-1 Big Ten).

The Maroon and Gold opened the dual by winning the doubles point. Minnesota's No. 1 duo of Chris Wettengel and Andres Osorio upset 38th- ranked Ravi Pathanjali and Jeff French, 8-4, to set the tone for the dual.

The Golden Gophers used the momentum from doubles to sweep the six singles matches, 6-0. Minnesota prevailed in three three-set matches to win its fourth dual in the last five contests. Wettengel, ranked No. 53, improved to 10-4 with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Pathanjali at No. 1 singles. Wettengel is now 5-1 this season at No. 1.

Aleksey Zharinov, ranked No. 96, won his second consecutive three-set match, downing Jose Orozco, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.

Minnesota faces No. 48 Michigan tomorrow at 11 a.m., before heading to East Lansing to take on No. 52 Michigan State on Sunday.
