Aleksey Zharinov Falls in First Round of NCAA Singles Championships

20University of Minnesota senior men's tennis player Aleksey Zharinov (Novosibirsk, Russia) lost in the first round at the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championships today in Tulsa, Okla. Zharinov, ranked 64th in the nation, lost 6-1, 6-2 to No. 41 Andreas Lauland of Virginia Tech. Zharinov was making his second consecutive appearance in the national singles tournament. He was one of six players from the Big Ten to earn a berth in the 2004 NCAA Singles Championships.
Zharinov, a 2004 All-Big Ten selection, finished the 2003-04 season with a 12-9 overall record in singles. Playing at Nos. 1 and 2, Zharinov compiled a team-best 8-2 mark in the Big Ten. He was 3-6 vs. ranked opponents with wins over No. 38 David Lingman of Harvard, No. 98 Malcolm Scatliffe of Penn State and No. 100 Andrew Formanczyk of Michigan State.
Last season at the NCAA Singles Championships, San Diego State's Oliver Maiberger defeated Zharinov, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round in Athens, Ga. Zharinov finished his junior season with a team-best 33-11 singles record for the Golden Gophers.
