queA pair of Minnesota track & field athletes, Trent Riter and Monica Stearns, recently posted "B" qualifying marks in their quest to compete in next month's Olympic Trials in Sacramento. The "B" standard is the equivalent to a provisional qualifying mark.

Riter ran a personal-best time of 1 minute, 47.78 seconds in the 800-meter run at the Cardinal Qualifier last weekend. His winning time is faster than the Minnesota school record. Riter completed his sophomore season for the Golden Gophers competing in the event at the recent NCAA Championships.

Stearns, who finished her Minnesota career at the NCAA Championships, cleared a height of 14 feet in the pole vault at a recent meet in Arkansas. That mark is over six inches better than her Minnesota school record accomplished earlier this spring.

Other current or former Golden Gopher men expected to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials in track & field are Mitch Potter (400m), Adam Steele (400m), Karl Erickson (shot put/discus) and, Travis Brandstatter (decathlon). Former Big Ten champion Shani Marks, a 2003 graduate, will compete in the women's triple jump.
