Five Gopher Swimmers Complete Second Day at U.S. Trials

Former Gopher Todd Smolinski finished 10th in the prelims with a time of 56.04, while adding a 13th-place finish in the semifinals. Adam Mitchell placed 25th in 57.85. Justin Mortimer and Terry Silkaitis competed in the 200 free event. Mortimer, who finished fourth overall in the 400 free yesterday, placed 16th in the preliminary heat of 1:51.17. Mortimer improved five spots placing ninth overall in the semifinal round with a time of 1:49.91. Silkaitis competed in his first race of the trials, clocking a time of 1:51.66 for 23rd overall.
Former Gopher Keri Hehn added a 14th-place showing in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.36. She moved up one spot in the semifinals with a time of 1:10.49
The trial action continues tomorrow with the 100 back, women's 100 breaststroke and 200 free finals. Television coverage can be found live on NBC. Silkaitis will compete in his next event Saturday in the 100 free, while Juleen Rodakowski will compete in the 200 butterfly.
