Gophers Open Large Lead After First Day of Minnesota Invitational

events on the first day of competition at the Minnesota Invitational and hold a dominating
lead. The Gophers scored 522 points this evening, well ahead of second place Wisconsin
(257 points).
The Gophers opened the neight with an easy win in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of
Colin Lee-To, Mario Delac, Ales Volcansek and Igor Cerensek cruised to the victory in 1:
20.67. The Gopher B team finished second in 1:22.67.
In the 500 freestyle, the versatile Adam Mitchell won with an NCAA provisional qualifying
time of 4:25.44 while Travis Beckerle was second in 4:27.35. Wisconsin's Scott RIce
touched first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:52.27. The Gophers' Jason
Timmer was just behind in a time of 1:52.62 while Russ Payne (1:53.31) and David
Plummer (1:53.37) rounded out the top four.
The Gophers completely dominated the 50 freestyle, posting eight of the top nine
finishers. Cerensek picked up the win in 20.65, followed by Volcansek (20.77), Delac
(20.79) and Lee-To (20.92). In 1-meter diving action, Shaun Kennedy blew by the field
with a six-dive score of 341.65 while Cole Young followed by tallyig 317.75 points. John
Schmidt (310.70) and Joe Skeate (299.15) rounded out the top four.
The Gophers closed tonight's competition with a win in the 400 medley relay. The
Minnesota A team of Plummer, Lee-To, Dan Berve and Delac won in a time of 3:17.58.
The Minnesota Invitational continues tomorrow with preliminaries at 11 a.m. and finals at
6 p.m.
