The University of Minnesota today filed with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) enforcement office the report of its investigation into allegations of NCAA rules violations in the university's men's tennis program. The investigation was conducted by the university's Office of the General Counsel. The alleged violations do not involve academic issues.
Effective Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, the university is placing men's tennis head coach David Geatz and men's tennis assistant coach Adam Cohen on a leave of absence with pay pending the NCAA's review of the alleged violations. The coaches will not be allowed to participate in any coaching activities with the university's tennis program.
The NCAA will begin its investigation of the alleged violations in the men's tennis program on Tuesday.
The university expects to be notified in four to six weeks of the NCAA's initial findings. General Counsel Mark Rotenberg expects that after receiving the NCAA staff's findings, the university will publicly release the university's investigative report. He said "state law does not allow the release of this information at this time."
Athletics Director Joel Maturi addressed the men's tennis team Friday evening. "Our highest priority is the welfare of our students," Maturi said. "I addressed the team to let them know firsthand that the university supports them and to explain how the program was going to move forward." Maturi is actively looking for someone to step in and coach the team before its next tennis match on Friday, Feb. 24.
