MTF: Gophers Take Five Titles, Qualify Three for Regionals

Fresh off earning All-America honors in the NCAA heptathlon, Brandstatter scored 7,386 points en route to winning the Wildcat Combined Events decathlon title. Brandstatter clocked 14.52 seconds to win the 110-meter hurdles portion of the event and finished second in discus, marking a personal-best distance of 142-9. He was also the runner-up in the high jump, clearing 6-4 1/4, and the javelin throw, marking 191-0.
Highlights from the Jim Click Shootout include Jason Swenson's victory in the javelin. Swenson was the only competitor to record a distance over 200 feet, launching a NCAA regional qualifying throw of 204-6, winning the event by nearly eight feet. Andy Tilstra took third-place in the discus, marking 176-5 and improving his regional qualifying distance by over nine feet. Curt Schoenfelder recorded regional qualifying distances in two events; the discus and hammer throws. Schoenfelder threw the discus 166-5, placing sixth and marked 186-1 in the hammer, finishing in seventh.
Erik Grumstrup captured the Raleigh Relays 3,000-meter steeplechase crown in a winning time of 9:09.30, just missing the regional qualifying standard by 1.15 seconds. Runner-up performances were recorded by Josh DoBell in the 5,000 meters (14:36.88) and Antonio Vega, who clocked a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 29:44.48.
Minnesota recorded victories in the 4x800 and 4x1500-meter relays. The Gopher foursome of Mike Van Beusekom, Ryan Ford, Todd Johnson and Trent Riter took the 3200-meter relay title in a winning time of 7:35.69. Van Beusekom, Riter and Ford also combined with Ben Hanson to claim the 4x1500 relay, clocking 15:41.29.
The Gophers take a week off from competition before traveling to Knoxville, Tenn. for the SEC vs. Big Ten meet on April 8.
