Travis Brandstatter climbed to the top of the decathlon standings after an impressive second day at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Brandstatter won the ten-event competition with a score of 7,641 points, automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships in June.

The Gophers senior was in fifth-place after what he admitted were a number mediocre performances during the first day of competition. But Brandstatter began Day Two with a solid mark in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking 14.21 seconds, only .05 off his all-time best.

He then followed with back-to-back personal-best efforts, marking 134-2 in the discus and clearing 15-9 in the pole vault. After launching a javelin throw of 195-6, Brandstatter finished his two-day test with a time of 4:40.40 in the 1,500 meters.

Brandstatter added 3,890 points to his score on Thursday, finishing 141 points above the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 7,500 points and outdistancing the runner-up competitor, Andrew Aakre of North Dakota State, by 113 points to capture the decathlon crown.

Minnesota throwers compete in the Long Beach Invitational on Friday and Saturday, while Gopher sprinters and distance runners take to the track at UW-Eau Claire, competing in the UWEC Open beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
