MTN: Ticer to Begin NCAA Singles Championship Play Wednesday

WednesdayUniversity of Minnesota senior men's tennis player Avery Ticer (Amarillo, Texas) will begin play Wednesday at the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. The national tournament continues through May 30.

Ticer, ranked 31st in the nation and unseeded in the tournament, will take on South Alabama's Franticek Babej. Ticer will be making his first career appearance in the NCAA singles tournament. The two are scheduled to begin play at 10 a.m. Babej, ranked No. 16 in the country, is seeded as one of the overall top 16 players in this tournament. He is currently 30-2 overall and owns a 22-0 mark this spring.

Ticer, the 2005 ITA/Ted Farnsworth Senior Player of the Year for the Midwest Region and a 2005 All-Big Ten selection, has played all of his matches at No. 1 singles, compiling a 14 -4 dual record and a 6-1 mark in Big Ten matches. Minnesota's first-ever three-year captain, he began the season with a semifinal appearance at the 2004 Big Ten Singles Championship before storming out of the gates in the dual season to vault up the national rankings. Ranked 105th in singles to start the year, Ticer rose to as high as No. 25 after posting a 7-4 record vs. ranked opponents with wins over Nos. 10, 25, 34, 46, 80 and 81.
