MTN: Ticer Falls in Opening Round of NCAA Singles Championship

matcUniversity of Minnesota senior men's tennis player Avery Ticer (Amarillo, Texas) lost his first-round match today at the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. Ticer, ranked 31st in the nation and unseeded in the tournament, lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to No. 16 Franticek Babej of South Alabama.

Ticer stormed out of the gate and overwhelmed Babej in the first set, but dropped a hard- fought second set 6-4. In the third set, Babej jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and went on to take the set and the match with a 6-2 win.

Ticer, the 2005 ITA/Ted Farnsworth Senior Player of the Year for the Midwest Region and a 2005 All-Big Ten selection, ends his senior season with a 14-5 record this spring. Minnesota's first-ever three-year captain, he was making his first career appearance in the NCAA singles tournament. Ticer began the season with a semifinal appearance at the 2004 Big Ten Singles Championship before starting strong in the dual season to vault up the national rankings. Ranked 105th in singles to start the year, Ticer rose to as high as No. 25 after posting a 7-4 record vs. ranked opponents with wins over Nos. 10, 25, 34, 46, 80 and 81.
