MTF: Gophers Ready for Midwest Regionals

and Minnesota will send 14 athletes to compete in the 2005 NCAA Midwest Regional meet scheduled for Friday and Saturday, May 27-28 at the John Jacobs Track & Field Complex on the University of Oklahoma campus. Gopher athletes will compete against qualifiers from Division I schools within the states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming.

The top five finishers in each individual event qualify for the national meet. At-large selections, athletes who finish among the top-eight participants at Regionals and are ranked on the national performance list, will complete the national field. The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held on June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif.

Senior Jason Swenson leads the list of men’s team qualifiers with a No. 5 ranking in the javelin, having marked a throw of 215 feet, 2 inches at Tennessee in early April. On the track, senior Ryan Ford is ranked sixth in the 1,500 meters. Ford clocked a personal-best time of 3 minutes, 45.68 seconds at the Oregon Invitational in April.

Action begins with the finals in the men’s discus and men’s high jump at noon on Friday. Preliminary rounds on the track start at 4 p.m. with the women’s 4x100-meter relay. The action resumes Saturday, starting with field event finals in the women’s discus and women’s high jump at noon. Running finals begin at 5 p.m. with the women’s 4x100-meter relay and continue through the final of the men’s 4x400-meter relay which is set for 8:15 p.m.
