MTF: Buzard Takes Sixth in 400 Meters at Regionals

NCAASophomore Aaron Buzard clocked 46.71 seconds, finishing sixth in the finals of the 400-meter dash at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet in Norman, Okla. With only the top five finishers automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships, Buzard must wait to see if he earns an at-large bid to the national meet.

Other Gopher runners competing on Saturday included Ryan Malmin and Erik Grumstrup racing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Malmin clocked a personal-best time of 9:02.89, taking ninth in the event. Grumstrup ended up 18th, finishing in a time of 9:24.80.

A trio of Gophers competed in the hammer throw, led by sophomore Adam Schnaible who finished 13th with a mark of 187 feet, 11 inches. Seniors Curt Schoenfelder and Andy Tilstra concluded their collegiate careers by placing 14th and 23rd, respectively. Schoenfelder landed a throw of 187-10 and Tilstra marked 176-6.

As a team, Minnesota finished 19th overall, totaling 11 points. Nebraska won the Midwest Regional title, scoring 92.50 points.

Three Gopher athletes have qualified for the NCAA Championships; Travis Brandstatter in the decathlon, Andrew Carlson in the 10,000 meters and Jason Swenson in the javelin. The NCAA Championships are scheduled for June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif.
