MTF: Gophers Begin Competition at the NCAA Championships

The NCAA Track & Field Championships
Three Golden Gophers, Travis Brandstatter, Andrew Carlson, and Jason Swenson, will represent the University of Minnesota men's track & field team in the NCAA Championships at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif., June 8-11.
NCAA Track & Field Championships Televised on Delay Basis
The 2005 NCAA Track & Field Championships will be televised on CBS on a tape-delayed basis on Saturday, June 18 at 2:30 p.m. CT.

SWENSON QUALIFIES FOR NCAA’S
Senior Jason Swenson marked 212 feet, 2 inches in the javelin, placing third at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet. By finishing among the top five javelin throwers, Swenson advances to the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career. Swenson enters the national meet ranked 19th among the 26 competitors.
CARLSON TO COMPETE IN 10K
Andrew Carlson automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 meters by clocking the second-fastest time in school history while competing in the Cardinal Invitational last month. Carlson ran the 10K race in a time of 28 minutes, 56.59 seconds, more than three seconds below the auto standard. He improved his personal-best mark at 10,000 meters by an amazing 37 seconds. Among the 26 10K racers, Carlson is seeded 20th.
ALL-AMERICAN DECATHLETE AGAIN?
Senior Travis Brandstatter will be seeking his second All-America certificate in the decathlon at the NCAA’s. Brandstatter posted an automatic qualifying score of 7,641 points en route to winning the Mt. SAC Relays decathlon title in late April. Brandstatter has the seventh-highest point total among the nation’s top-26 decathletes.
