GamGopher All-American swimmer Terry Silkaitis narrowly missed an individual medal at the World University Games today in Izmir, Turkey. The 23-time All-American finished in a tie for fourth in the 100-meter freestyle, just a tenth of a second from a medal. Silkaitis won a bronze medal yesterday by swimming the lead leg of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.
Silkaitis touched the wall in 50.00, tying with fellow American Matt Grevers. Italy's Alessandro Calvi claimed the bronze in 49.90. Russia's Evgeny Lagunov and Andrey Kapralov won the gold and silver in 49.52 and 49.70 respectively. Silkaitis' time was the second-best 100 free mark of his career, topped only by his lead leg of the 4x100 relay last evening where he went a blistering 49.84. The Skokie, Ill. native owned the second-best prelim time of 50.03 to secure a middle lane assignment for the finals.
Fellow Gopher teammate Justin Mortimer will swim the 400-meter freestyle tomorrow at the World University Games.
