University of Minnesota junior swimmer David Plummer was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week today by the conference office. Plummer won both of his individual events and a relay in the Gophers' 190-101 victory over Iowa on Friday evening. The honor is the first for the Oklahoma City, Okla. native.
Plummer won the 100-yard backstroke in 49.22 and the 200-yard backstroke in 1:48.43. He also swam the lead leg of the 200 medley relay that won in a time of 1:30.69. He is the first Gopher to win the conference award since Adam Mitchell was honored almost exactly a year ago on October 25, 2005.
Plummer was named to the Team USA roster for the 2007 World University Games after an outstanding summer of competition. He placed fifth in the 100-meter backstroke and sixth in the 200 back at the 2006 U.S. Summer Nationals, earning a spot on the Team USA roster at the Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria, B.C. Plummer, a six-time All-American, is the school record holder in the 200-yard backstroke and ranks second all-time in the 100 backstroke.
The 10th-ranked Golden Gophers travel to Gainesville, Fla. to compete against the No. 3 Florida Gators on Friday evening at 4 p.m.
