Four Gopher Wrestlers Seeded First for the Southern Scuffle

Four University of Minnesota wrestlers will enter this weekend’s Southern Scuffle as the top seed in their respective weight classes. Manuel Rivera (141), Dustin Schlatter (149), Roger Kish (184) and Cole Konrad (Hwt) each received the top spot in the brackets in the seedings released last week.
The second-ranked Golden Gophers have the most No. 1 seeds of any team in the tournament. Top-ranked Missouri and No. 12 Edinboro are the only other schools with multiple No. 1 seeds, both with two apiece.
Three other Minnesota wrestlers also enter the tournament seeded in the top eight in their respective weight classes. Redshirt freshman Jayson Ness is seeded No. 4 at 125 pounds, while true freshman Scott Glasser is No. 8 at 165. Gabriel Dretsch is No. 2 in the 174-pound weight class behind only top-ranked Ben Askren of Missouri.
While they are not squaring off directly, the Gophers and Tigers will undoubtedly be battling for national supremacy in college wrestling. The Tigers currently claim the top spot in the coaches’ poll, while the Gophers are ranked second. The roles are reversed in the W.I.N Magazine poll, where Minnesota is No. 1 and Missouri No. 2. Whichever team comes out ahead at the Southern Scuffle will likely be the consensus No. 1 team in the nation.
The Southern Scuffle will be held Friday, Dec. 29 - Saturday, Dec. 30 in Greensboro, N.C. Fans can purchase a live webcast for both days of the tournament through www.southernscuffle.com, which will also be the source for the most up-to-date results throughout the competition.

Following the Southern Scuffle, the Gophers will return home to host Arizona State on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at the Sports Pavilion. It will be Minnesota’s final tune-up before the National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Jan. 13-14.
