Minnesota Advances to Semifinals of National Duals

The second-ranked University of Minnesota wrestling team advanced to the semifinals of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals with a convincing 30-7 victory over No. 9 Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Gophers won eight of ten matches over CMU, including Mike Thorn’s pin of Conor Beebe at 133 pounds. Top-ranked Cole Konrad extended his winning streak to 56 consecutive matches with a dominant 18-3 tech fall over No. 5 Bubba Gritter. Roger Kish added a 16-7 major decision over Benjamin Kelto to help Minnesota to the victory.

Sixth-ranked Jayson Ness again proved why he is such a valuable asset at the top of the lineup for the Gophers. Ness cruised to a 9-2 victory over No. 15 Luke Smith at 125 pounds with three takedowns and a reversal. He built up nearly four minutes of riding time to earn the bonus point and give Minnesota an early 3-0 advantage.

Thorn upped the lead to nine with his pin of Beebe. After trailing 0-2 after the first period, Thorn started down in the second. He tied the score at two with a reversal and then quickly put Beebe on his back to earn the fall at 3:46.

The middle of Minnesota’s lineup put the dual out of reach for Central Michigan, with No. 5 Manuel Rivera (141), No. 1 Dustin Schlatter (149), C.P. Schlatter (157) and No. 19 Jeremy Larson (165) all earning decision. Rivera and Dustin Schlatter each remained unbeaten on the season, while C.P. Schlatter earned his second win of the day in his first action since late November.

Larson, who entered the rankings for the first time this week, put his relentless style on display much like he has all year. After a scoreless first period, Larson rode CMU’s Mike Miller nearly the entire second period to build up advantage time. Though he trailed 0-1 after the second, a reversal early in the third was all he would need for the win. Miller tied the match at two with an escape, but the riding time advantage was too much to overcome as Larson came away with a 3-2 victory.

CMU would win two of the next three bouts, but Kish’s major decision put the match away for the Gophers. Kish scored six takedowns, a reversal and an escape, giving up only one takedown to Kelto in the match.

Konrad capped off the day with the dominant victory over Gritter. Konrad scored early and often, taking Gritter down just 12 seconds into the match. He added two more takedowns and a pair of three-point near falls to lead 12-2 after the first period. Much of the same followed, as Konrad added another takedown and pair of two-point near falls in the second to end the match at 4:25, winning by an 18-3 margin.

Minnesota will now face No. 4 Iowa State, which knocked off third-ranked Hofstra, in the semis tomorrow at 11 a.m. In the other semifinal, top-ranked Missouri will face off against No. 5 Oklahoma State.
