The top men’s tennis players in the Midwest Region will take to the Baseline Tennis Center courts this weekend as Minnesota hosts the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional tournament Friday through Monday.
The event begins with qualifying matches on Friday and concludes with the semifinals and finals on Monday. Admission is free for the entire weekend. The singles finalists and doubles champions earn berths to the National ITA indoor championships Nov. 1-4 in Columbus, Ohio.
Minnesota could have as many as seven players in the 64-player singles draw. Three Golden Gophers have automatically qualified in singles, including senior Raoul Schwark, who captured the Princeton Invitational earlier this fall and owns a 6-2 season record. A pair of freshmen, Tobias Wernet and Sebastian Gallego, who met in last week’s Northwestern Invitational title match, are also in the main draw. Wernet is 6-1 for the season and handed Gallego his first loss in four matches with a 7-5, 6-4 decision last weekend. Four other Golden Gophers’ players will compete in qualifying rounds on Friday.
In doubles, Minnesota has three teams in the main 64-team draw. Schwark and Wernet will team together, while Gallego and senior Pierre Dumas will form a team. Freshman Adam Altepeter and sophomore Dino Bilankov round out the Gophers’ doubles tandems.
Complete draws will be determined on Thursday. They will be available at the tennislink website, which can be accessed through the link at the top of this page.
