Minnesota senior Raoul Schwark shook off his open round loss in the main draw at the All-American Tennis Championships and bounced back with back-to-back victories in the consolation bracket Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Schwark, the nation’s No. 41-ranked player, opened the day with a hard-fought, three-set victory over Marek Sramek of South Alabama, then earned a berth in Saturday’s consolation bracket quarterfinals by notching another three-set win over Rudolf Siwy of Fresno State during the afternoon session.
The match vs. Sramek was a classic back-and-forth battle, with Schwark cruising in the first set, 6-2. Sramek regained the momentum by taking set two, 6-4, before Schwark closed out the match with a 6-2 win in set three.
The three-set battle with Sramek briefly took its toll on Schwark in his second match of the day vs. Siwy, as the Minnesota senior fell behind early after dropping the first set, 6-3.
But Schwark began heating up as the match wore on. He cruised to a 6-1 win in the second set before capturing the match with a 6-4 win in set three to run his singles record to 6-1 on the young season.
Schwark will meet Ohio State’s Justin Kronauge in Saturday’s consolation bracket quarterfinals.
