University of Minnesota men’s tennis coach Geoff Young has announced that Phillip Arndt has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Gophers next season.

Arndt, a native of Lancaster, Ky., won the Kentucky State closed tournament without losing a set this past summer and represented Kentucky in the Southern Junior Cup in September. He also played in the United States Tennis Association Boys National Championships in August in Kalamazoo, Mich., advancing to the third round in doubles.

Arndt is ranked 100th nationally by tennisrecruiting.net and is 83rd on the website’s RPI rankings. He is listed as a four-star recruit and has four career wins over five-star and blue-chip players. Arndt won the Southern Level 3 title at the Springhurst New Year’s Classic last December and was the consolation champion a the BullFrog Southern Designated tournament.

"Phillip is a tall lefty who is going to help take the Golden Gopher tennis program to the next level,” Young said of the 6-2, 165-pounder. “He is improving at a quicker rate than others his age.  There is so much potential and upside for Phillip due to his huge serve and large frame.”

Arndt joins a Minnesota team that has qualified for the NCAA tournament 13 of the past 14 years and posted a 15-10 record last season.
