The 31st-ranked University of Minnesota men's tennis team improved to 5-1 on the season with a 4-1 upset win over 13th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth today in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Golden Gophers used the momentum from a 2-1 effort in doubles play, going 3-1 in singles action to move their record vs. ranked opponents to 2-1 this season.

The Maroon and Gold opened the dual by winning the doubles point, taking victories at Nos. 1 and 3. After a VCU win at No. 2, Minnesota got on the board with Andres Osorio and Chi Pham's 8-5 win over Sergi Arumi and Sebastien Deridder at No. 3. The Golden Gophers clinched the doubles point at No. 1 with a 9-8 (4) triumph by D.J. Geatz and Sion Wilkins over Arnaud Le Cloerec and Petr Olsak.

The Rams bounced back quickly in singles play with Georges-Alexandre Israel's 6-0, 6-2 win over Dino Bilankov at No. 6 to knot the score at 1-1. From there, however, Minnesota rattled off three victories to clinch the dual. Osorio, ranked 77th in the nation, got the Golden Gophers started at No. 1 with his 6-3, 6-4 win over Arumi. After a three-set victory by Mikey Kantar at No. 4, Geatz clinched the dual win at No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Emil Lindgren.

"Our doubles continues to get better and that makes a world of difference when you have that 1-0 lead going into singles play," Head Coach Geoff Young said. "Our guys fought really, really hard against a good VCU team and were rewarded for it."
