The 61st-ranked New Mexico men's tennis team knocked off the 18th-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers Friday afternoon at the UNM Tennis Complex. The 5-2 victory keeps the Lobos undefeated at home (7-0) and gives them their first win over Minnesota since 1999.
After falling at No. 2 and 3 doubles yesterday, head coach Alan Dils switched up the tandems and got better results. Junior Chris Parkes and sophomore Graeme Kassautzki ran away with an 8-2 win at No. 3 while sophomores Miles Bugby and Johnny Parkes completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 2.
Kassautzki increased UNM's lead to 2-0, dominating D.J. Geatz at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0. The Gophers wouldn't go away easily, tying the match with wins at No. 1 and 2.
Chris Parkes grabbed his seventh straight singles win and put the Lobos within a point of the upset with his 6-3, 7-6 victory over Mikey Kantar at No. 5. Bubgy sealed the win, his seventh straight, with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Nich Edlefsen at No. 4.
Junior Kamil Pajkowski, who won at No. 1 doubles with junior Max Jones, remained unbeaten for the day with a come-from-behind win at No. 6. He lost the first set, 4-6, to Brian Lipinski, but rallied 6-4, 6-2.
