Adam Schnaible Paces Gopher Men's Track

Senior Adam Schnaible placed second with regional qualifying distances in both the hammer and shot put to pace the Minnesota men’s track & field team at Saturday’s Musco Twilight Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa. Schnaible marked a throw of 197 feet, 7 inches in the hammer, his best effort of the season. The Gopher senior than added a career-best performance in the shot put with a toss of 58-7 1/4, the 10th-best throw in school history.

The shot put event was a bright spot of the Golden Gophers. Aaron Studt added a fourth-place showing with a regional qualifying mark of 56-5 3/4. Jerry Netland finished eighth with a career-best toss of 52-10. Netland also placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 150-8.

The Gophers grabbed two of the top three finishes in the triple jump. Pat Akpaette won the event with a leap of 48-5 1/2, while Raymond Blackledge was third with a distance of 46-7 1/4.

Minnesota had not only one but two pole vaulters clear 16 feet for the first time this season. Elliott Esch and Joe Plencner both cleared 16-0 3/4, with Esch taking second and Plencner third. Ben Peterson placed fourth with a height of 15-5, while Matt Merkey cleared the same height but finished seventh.

Two other Golden Gophers recorded top-five finishes. Todd Johnson placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:52.25 and Hans Storvick placed fifth in the 800 meters in a time of 1:50.54.

The top finishes from the Gophers competing at the Carleton Relays on Saturday was David Krueger, who placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.84.
