Raoul Schwark Named to 2007 All-Big Ten Team

University of Minnesota men’s tennis player Raoul Schwark (Dalheim, Germany) has been named to the 2007 Men’s Tennis All-Big Ten Team. The lone Golden Gopher on the team earned his first career conference honor.
A junior, Schwark has been Minnesota’s top singles and doubles player for the better part of the 2006-07 season. The native of Germany owns a 21-8 overall singles record, a 16-6 mark in dual matches and a 7-3 Big Ten record. Unranked in singles to start the year, Schwark is currently ranked 64th in the nation in singles and has been ranked as high as No. 58. He has won 13 of his last 15 matches and owns two wins over ranked opponents this season. In doubles, Schwark owns an 11-12 record in dual matches.
In addition to Schwark’s All-Big Ten honor, senior Mikey Kantar was named Minnesota’s 2007 Sportsmanship Award Honoree. To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must have distinguished herself through sportsmanship and ethical behavior, be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Kantar is now a candidate for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the Conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
Schwark, Kantar and the sixth-seeded Golden Gophers were upset in the first round of the 2007 Big Ten Championship today, falling 4-1 to 11th-seed and host Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. The 37th-ranked Golden Gophers (15-9, 5-5 Big Ten) now look to gain a berth in the NCAA Championships. The team selections for the national tournament will be announced on Tuesday, May 1.
