Gophers Earn Second Dual Win of the Season

The University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team earned its second Big Ten dual win of the weekend as the Golden Gophers defeated Michigan State, 164-132 in East Lansing, Mich. The Gophers opened the 2008-09 season with a win over Michigan last night, 169-130. The Gophers won 10 of 16 events contested.

The Gophers started the day with a 200 medley relay win. Minnesota’s A team of Deidre DeWall, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison and Stacy Busack set a pool record with a time of 1:43.03. After MSU held a second-place time of 1:45.72, Minnesota’s B relay of Jenna Lennertz, Molly Belk, Megan Braun and Meredith McCarthy touched the wall in 1:46.03.
 
The Gophers took the top three spots in the 1000 free. Lissa Tommerdahl won the event in 10:08.48, while Hannah Whitehead finished second in 10:08.96, while Marissa Davies placed third in 10:15.84. Yuen Kobayashi, Christine Jennings and Ashley Steenvoorden also took the top three spots in the 200 free. Kobayashi chipped in a pool record time of 1:50.79, while Jennings held a time of 1:52.29 and Steenvoorden finished third in 1:53.74.
 
Jamison earned an individual win in the 100 breast when she finished in 1:05.41, while Meredith McCarthy won the 50 free in 23.99. Alison Eggers and Meagan Radecke finished second and third in the event in 24.12 and 24.22. Davies, Radecke and Eggers held times of 52.30, 52.64 and 52.78 to lead the field in the 100 free.
 
Jenny Shaughnessy and Kait Strickland each won an event with Shaughnessy winning the 200 back (2:03.26) and Strickland earning a win in the 200 breast (2:21.01). Kristen Steenvoorden won the 500 free in a time of 4:58.00 for her first event win of her Gopher career. Jamison won her second  individual event of the night, this time in the 200 IM. Jamison clocked a time of 2:04.91.
 
In diving action, Taylor Enerson led the Gophers in both the one and three-meter events. Enerson placed second on the 3-meter with a score of 261, which was a personal-best score. In three-meter, Enerson had a score of 240.30, which was also a personal best and improved by two points from yesterday’s score.
