Gophers Open Season With Alumni Meet

The University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team opened the 2008-09 season this evening, hosting the annual Alumni Meet at University Aquatic Center. Keith Yoho, Rob Schaefer, Curt Carlson, Kevin Baseheart, Ivan Gutesa, Chris Peterson and Michael Richards posted individual event victories.
The Minnesota C 200 medley relay team of Nico Zebley, Mark Solfelt, Alex Wold and Ray Betuzzi clocked a 1:32.74 to squeak out a win to open the meet. In the first individual swimming event, freshman Keith Yoho won the 100 backstroke in 53.31. Gopher 2008 alum Matt Engel took the 50 butterfly in 22.57, touching out senior Colin Lee-To and Curt Carlson clocked a 20.61 to win the 50 free.
In the 100 free, sophomore Kevin Baseheart timed a 46.04 to cruise to an easy win over a nine-swimmer field. Freshman Dominique Massie-Martel was second in 46.75. Sophomore Ivan Gutesa took the 50 breaststroke in 26.74 and sophomore Michael Richards took first in the one-lap 25 free with a time of 9.44. He touched out Lee-To's time of 9.47.
In the 100 butterfly, junior Alex Wold took first place in 51.22 and sophomore Chris Peterson paced the field in the 100 individual medley with a time of 55.07. Sophomore Drew Brown led the Gophers in 1-meter diving with a score of 326.10 while Cole Young placed second with a tally of 298.60.
The Gophers continue competition on October 18 at noon with the Intrasquad Meet. The Gophers open the regular season at North Carolina October 31-November 1 in Chapel Hill.
