Gophers Jump Out to Big Lead Over UNC

The No. 12 University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team opened the first night of a two-day dual against North Carolina with eight event wins to lead 118-68 after the first day of the two-day meet. The Golden Gophers and the No. 16 Tar Heels will face each other at noon tomorrow to conclude the meet.
Minnesota opened the dual with a win in the 200 medley relay. The Gopher four of Deidre DeWall, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison combined for a time of 1:42.15. Minnnesota’s B relay of Jenna Lennertz, Molly Belk, Megan Braun and Meagan Radecke finished third overall in a time of 1:46.53.
Ashley Steenvoorden and Kristen Steenvoorden chipped in the winning and third-place times in the 1,000 free. Ashley Steenvoorden held a winning time of 9:48.89, while Kristen Steenvoorden finished in 9:57.60 for third overall. Christine Jennings finished fourth overall in a time of 10:01.71.
Minnesota took the top two spots in the 200 freestyle from seniors Jenny Shaughnessy and Meredith McCarthy. Shaughnessy won the event in 1:49.41, while McCarthy placed second in 1:50.40. Yuen Kobayashi finished fourth overall in the same event in 1:50.82. North Carolina won its first event of the meet when Megan Steeves won in 55.32. DeWall finished second in 57.35 while Lennertz clocked a time of 57.65 for third.
Tyler earned a provisional qualifying time of 1:00.72 to win the 100 breaststroke, while Kait Strickland finished fourth in the same event in 1:05.54. Belk followed Tyler’s performance with an event win of her own in the 200 fly. Belk touched the wall in 2:02.05 for the win, while Braun placed third in 2:04.64 and Kelsey Ridder finished fourth in 2:05.31.
Stacy Busack won the 50 free in a time of 23.25, followed by Jamison in the third (23.67) and Meagan Radecke in fourth (23.75). Tyler won her second event, this time in the 200 individual medley. Tyler won in 2:01.69, while DeWall and Shaughnessy held the fourth and fifth-fastest times in the same event (2:04.59 and 2:05.10).
The Gophers concluded the night with a win in the 800 free relay. Kobayashi, Shaughnessy, McCarthy and Marissa Davies chipped in a winning time of 7:22.75 for the win, while North Carolina was second in 7:24.31.
