Gophers Win Big Against No. 16 North Carolina

The No. 12 University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team earned a 217-151 win over the No. 16 North Carolina Tar Heels, today in Chapel Hill, N.C. During the two-day meet, Minnesota won 15 of 20 events, including three relay wins.
The Golden Gophers started the second day just as they did in the first with a medley relay win. The 400 medley relay of Deidre DeWall, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison and Stacy Busack combined for a time of 3:43.16 to win the event. The 200 medley relay, which were all of the same Gopher swimmers as in the 400 medley relay, won the event last evening to start the meet.
Minnesota continued its winning relay ways when Busack, Jamison, Meagan Radecke and Meredith McCarthy helped the Gophers to another 11 points and a win in the 200 free relay. The relay chipped in a winning time of 1:33.19, while Minnesota’s B relay of Alison Eggers, Molly Belk, Andrea Hanson and Castina Wabeke finished third in 1:36.70.
Minnesota had three swimmers finish in the top five in the 400 individual medley. Jenny Shaughnessy won the event in 4:19.19, while Kait Strickland placed third overall in 4:23.48. Kristen Steenvoorden held a time of 4:28.88, good enough for fifth place.
Busack won her third event of the day and fifth of the weekend when she won the 100 free. Busack touched the wall in 50.53, while McCarthy clocked a time of 51.11 to finish third. Eggers added another two points to the Gopher lead when she finished fourth overall in 51.83. DeWall and Hannah Whitehead finished second and third overall in the 200 back. DeWall held a time of 2:02.76, while Whitehead followed in third with a time of 2:03.45.
Minnesota added a one-two punch in the 100 fly from Jamison and Megan Braun. Jamison won the 100 fly in 55.39, followed by Braun in 56.79 to add another 15 points to Minnesota’s lead.
Christine Jennings won the 500 freestyle with a season-best and provisional qualifying time of 4:49.55. Jillian Tyler also clocked a provisional qualifying time of 2:11.73. She dominated the event, finishing nearly eight seconds ahead of UNC’s Layne Brodie when she finished in a time of 2:19.21.
The Tar Heels won their first relay of the weekend in the 400 free as Minnesota placed second in the event. Busack, McCarthy, Shaughnessy and Eggers held a second-place time of 3:24.14, while UNC had a winning time of 3:23.63.
In diving action over the weekend, Taylor Enerson finished second in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 252.52. Maggie Thomas also chipped in a second-place finish in the one-meter event when she held a score of 249.15.
Minnesota returns to action next weekend when it faces the Iowa Hawkeyes, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host the Hawkeyes as the Gophers hold their annual Pack the Pool event. First 500 fans receive a free gift. Gopher student-athletes will also sign autographs, while face-painting and other promotional items will be on hand.
