Four From Minnesota Reach Big Ten Round of 16

Four Minnesota players advanced to the round of 16 following Saturday’s competition at the Big Ten men’s tennis singles tournament at Madison, Wis.
Tobias Wernet, Sebastian Gallego, Dino Bilankov and Philip Arndt all won a pair of matches on Saturday to reach Sunday’s third round in the 64-player field. Bilankov and Arndt will face each other in the next match.
Wernet is the tournament’s top seed and rolled in his first two matches, posting a 6-4, 6-4 win over Will Vasos of Iowa and a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Maxime Armengaud of Indiana.
Gallego, the fifth seed in the field, posted a pair of wins over Iowa opponents to reach the third round. He cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Walter Grimes in the opening round and then held off Gregory Holm 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.
Bilankov, who is seeded 11th, had wins over Penn State’s Jason Lee 6-4, 6-0 and Iowa’s Reinaud Haal 6-2, 6-1. Arndt defeated Connor Roth of Illinois 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 and Gian Hodgson of Wisconsin 6-2, 7-5 to set up his matchup with Bilankov.
Minnesota had four other players in the main draw with Michael Sicora reaching the second round with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Northwestern’s Alex Sanborn. He was knocked out of the event with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Indiana’s Will Kendall.
Jake Annear lost his opening match to 13th-seeded Alex Forger of Michigan State 6-3, 6-1, while Julian Dehn fell to 15th-seeded Ruan Roelofsoe of Illinois 6-7, 6-1, 7-5. Adam Altepeter reached the main draw with a consolation win in qualifying, but lost his opening match to third-seeded Marc Dwyer of Northwestern 6-0, 7-6. Eddie Svenda also participated, but was defeated in qualifying.
