Minnesota Blanked by Texas Christian

Minnesota dropped two matches in third-set tiebreakers as the Gophers were blanked by unbeaten Texas Christian 7-0 on Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Gophers’ Dino Bilankov lost the opening set of his No. 2 singles match 7-5, but rallied for a 6-3 win in the second set before dropping a super tiebreaker by an 11-9 score. Sebastian Gallego had a similar fate at No. 3 singles as he won the first set 6-4 and then lost the second set 7-5 and 13-11 in the super tiebreaker.

Minnesota’s other four singles losses were all in straight sets with Derek Peterson putting up a tight match at No. 6 singles with a 7-5, 6-4 setback.

The Gophers are ranked 66th in the country and dropped to 1-7 overall, while TCU is ranked 46th and is now 9-0 for the year.

Gophers’ No. 1 singles player Raoul Schwark entered the match ranked 46th in the country, but lost to 83rd-ranked Cosmin Cotet 6-0, 6-4.

Two of the Horned Frogs’ doubles teams are nationally ranked and handed the Gophers 8-5 losses. Kriegler Brink and Cotet beat Schwark and Gallego at No. 1, while Emanu Brighiu and Adrian Simon beat Adam Altepeter and Chi Pham at No. 2.

Minnesota concludes its trip on Sunday when it faces 44th-ranked Southern Methodist in Dallas.
