Three Set Losses Cost Gophers at San Diego

Minnesota had first set leads in four of six singles matches, but Raoul Schwark emerged as the only victor as the Gophers suffered a 6-1 men’s tennis loss at San Diego on Monday.

Schwark, ranked 77th nationally, knocked off 43rd-ranked Thomas Liversage 7-5, 7-6 at No. 1 singles. Schwark and Tobias Wernet also battled Liversage and Chris Coetzee, ranked 55th in doubles, to an 8-5 loss at No. 1.

Dino Bilankov and Sebastian Gallego combined for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles for Minnesota, but the Toreros took the No. 3 doubles match to take the doubles point.

Wernet took the first set from 73rd-ranked Dean Jackson at No. 2 singles, but suffered a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 loss. Bilankov at No. 4 and Chi Pham at No. 5 both won their respective first sets, but lost in three sets. Gallego lost his No. 3 singles match in three sets as well.

Minnesota is now 2-11 overall, while San Diego, ranked 62nd in the country, is now 7-4 overall. The Gophers return home to face Indiana on Saturday at noon.
