Wernet Leads Gophers in Loss to Penn State

Wernet came back for a 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles. Gallego teamed with Dino Bilankov for Minnesota’s lone doubles win with an 8-5 wn at No. 2, however, Penn State won the other two doubles contests to take the first point of the match and then picked up wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles for a 3-0 lead.

Minnesota’s Raoul Schwark, ranked 87th nationally, battled 34th-ranked Michael James to a three-set match before falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. James' win was one of three three-set singles victories for the Nittany Lions.

The Gophers, who are now 2-14 overall and 0-3 in the Big Ten, play on Sunday at Michigan. Penn State, ranked 51st in the nation, is 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
