Jerry Netland Wins Discus at Mesa Classic

Junior Jerry Netland captured the open discus title at the Mesa Classic in Mesa, Ariz., on Friday evening. Netland marked a season-best throw for the Gophers with a distance of 159 feet, 8 inches.
A pair of Gopher throwers accomplished the rare feat of competing in two meets in a single day. After competing in the Mesa Classic, Aaron Studt and Andy Bastian drove to Tempe to compete in the hammer throw of the Sun Angel Classic.
Studt placed second in the hammer (182-1) at the Mesa Classic, then 14th in the Sun Angel (170-0). He was also fifth in the discus (154-10) at Mesa.
Bastian finished fourth in the hammer at Mesa (177-0) and 13th at the Sun Angel (173-6).
Peter Miller also competed in the Mesa Classic in the discus, placing seventh with a throw of 148-11.
Action continues on Saturday at the Sun Angel Classic, hosted by Arizona State.
