Almstrom Advances to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier

University of Minnesota senior to be Victor Almstrom (Vallingby, Sweden) shot a 4-under 68 Monday afternoon at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn. to advance to the sectional qualifier for the 2008 United States Open Golf Championship. The sectional qualifier is scheduled to take place on June 2 at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill. The 108th U.S. Open will take place June 12-15 at Torrey Pines Golf Club in La Jolla, Calif.
Former Gopher Josh Persons also carded a 4-under 68 to join Almstrom and a group of five others to qualify for the sectional round. Several other current and former Gophers played in the qualifier, including three-time All-American Bronson La’Cassie, who carded a 3-under 69 and is listed at the second alternate for the sectional. Other golfers with Gopher ties included Andrew Paulson (2-under 70), Clayton Rask (2-under 70), Cameron White (1-under 71), Yu Katayama (1-under 71), Robbie Kelley (2-over 74), Justin Kaplan (4-over 76), Patrick Datz (4-over 76), Thomas Campbell (4-over 76) and Ben Pisani (7-over 79).
Almstrom, an All-Big Ten First Team honoree this season, played in 11 tournaments as a junior for the Gophers, including the NCAA Central Regional this past weekend (May 15-17) in Columbus, Ohio. He finished the season second on the team with a 73.54 stroke average. He recorded four top-10 finishes during the 2007-08 season, including a tie for second place at the Ping/Golfweek Preview and a third place finish at the Gopher Invitational to open the fall season. Almstrom also finished in a tie for fifth place with a 72-hole score of 5-over 293 to lead the Gophers to a second place finish at the 2008 Big Ten Championships.
