Gopher Women Head to Madison for Badger Invite

BADGER INVITATIONAL: Minnesota will stay in Big Ten Country for their next competition as they will head to Madison, Wis. to compete in the Badger Invitational this weekend. The Invite will be played at University Ridge Golf Course, a 6,204 yard par 72 course. The Gophers finished seventh in last year’s event.

University Ridge has been the site of several women’s collegiate and Wisconsin state golf tournaments, most notably the 1998 NCAA Div. I Women’s Golf Championship, and the 2000 Big Ten Women’s Golf Championship. It also played host to the 1995 and 2005 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championship. 

The tournament field includes Cal Berkeley, College of Charleston,Georgetown, Illinois, Indiana, Kennesaw State, Maryland, Minnesota, Penn State, Southern Methodist, Tulane and the host Badgers.

The 12-team field will participate in a 54-hole invitational Playing in threesomes, the teams will play 36 holes Saturday in a shotgun format starting at 8:30 a.m. Pairings for the final 18 holes on Sunday will be determined by scores. Sunday’s shotgun start will be at 8:00 a.m. The low four individual scores will determine the team score for each round.

MARY FOSSUM INVITATIONAL RECAP: The Gophers finished fifth in the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing after carding a team score of 917, six shots behind fourth place Missouri.

Michigan State and Kent State tied for the team lead after the 54-hole event with identical scores of 28-over par 891. The host Spartans were awarded the team title by virtue of a second tie breaker. Kent State's Kirby Dreher took home medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 1-over 217. 
 
The Gophers had four players finish in the top 20 individually, led by sophomore Teresa Puga in 14th with a 10-over par 226. She opened the tournament with an even par round of 72 in the morning session on Saturday and shot a 2-over 74 in the afternoon before closing with an 80 on Sunday. Mary Narzisi finished in a tie for 15th place after carding a final round 78. She opened the tournament with rounds of 74 and 76.

Senior Kelli Berns shot a 79 on Sunday and finished in 19th place. A pair of Gopher sophomores, Michele Edlin and Samantha Sommers, finished in a tied for 26th and tie for 59th while junior Christine Herzog, playing the invitational as an individual, tied for 52nd.

THE GOPHERS: Minnesota’s lineup this weekend will include seniors Kelli Berns and Paige Bromen and sophomores Michele Edlin, Mary Narzisi and Teresa Puga. Senior Young Na Lee will be playing the tournament as an individual. 

UP NEXT: The Gophers will take some time off before heading to West Lafayette, Ind. to take part in the Purdue Lady Northern Tournament on Oct. 18-19.
