The University of Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team opens the 2009-10 season on the road at Wisconsin, Friday in Madison, Wis. Minnesota hosted the Badgers last season, defeating Wisconsin 237-116. The Gophers last swam in Madison during the 2006-07 season, defeating both Wisconsin (243-110) and Purdue University (206-147) at the Big Ten Triple Duals.
The Gophers posted a 6-0 dual meet record in 2008-09 and finished third at the Big Ten Championships and 11th at the NCAA Championships.
The Gophers started the season with the alumni meet and intrasquad meet in the first two weeks of October and will have their first chance to swim against another team on Friday evening. “We have been working hard. It’s good to finally get in the water against another team in a competition,” assistant coach Bill Tramel said. “Hopefully it will give us a good gauge to where we are right now. Our guys are motivated to swim well.”
Head Coach Dennis Dale starts his 25th season at the helm of Minnesota swimming and diving. During his tenure the Gopher coach has led Minnesota to five Big Ten titles in the last nine years and seven in the last 13. His list of accomplishments include 18 straight top 15 finishes at the NCAA Championships, 21 consecutive top-three finishes at the Big Ten Championships and Dale has coached more than one hundred different All-Americans.
