The Minnesota men’s track & field team will be honored in the third quarter of Saturday’s Homecoming football game recognizing the Golden Gophers’ 2009 Big Ten Conference indoor and outdoor championships. The 2009 Gophers were just the second team in Minnesota history (1998) to capture Big Ten indoor and outdoor team titles in the same season.
Among these honored Gopher athletes are distance runner Hassan Mead, who won four track titles last season and was named the 2009 Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year; indoor high jump champion Matt Fisher, the 2009 Indoor Field Event Athlete of the Year; thrower Aaron Studt, the indoor and outdoor shot put champion and the 2009 Big Ten Outdoor Field Event Athlete of the Year; and Big Ten pentathlon champion R.J. McGinnis. Head coach Steve Plasencia, a Minnesota alum, was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year.
