Another match against a ranked Big East foe headlines Minnesota’s upcoming men’s tennis weekend in Kentucky.
The Gophers will take on 43rd-ranked Louisville on Saturday after already handling the Cardinals’ conference rivals Marquette and DePaul by 7-0 scores last weekend to open the season 2-0. Minnesota concludes its trip to the Bluegrass State on Sunday with a match against Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Ky.
The trip will also be a homecoming for Minnesota freshman Phillip Arndt, who is a Lancaster, Ky. native and was one of the state’s top players in recent years. Arndt is off to a strong start in his collegiate career with the Gophers with a 10-4 overall record and a pair of wins at No. 5 singles last weekend. He also teamed with No. 1 singles player Ishay Hadash for two wins at No. 3 doubles.
Along with Arndt and Hadash, Minnesota’s No. 1 doubles partners, Tobias Wernet and Michael Sicora also opened the season with victories in both singles and doubles. Wernet won both of his matches at No. 2 singles and Sicora won a pair of No. 4 singles matches.
Louisville is 5-1 with its only loss coming 4-3 to eighth-ranked Tennessee. The Gophers and Cardinals have played twice with each team taking a 5-2 victory. Louisville won the most recent meeting in 2006 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Minnesota is playing Eastern Kentucky for the first time. The Colonels are currently 2-2 overall.
