Aztecs Pull Out Tight Matches to Edge Gophers

Sebastian Gallego and Julian Dehn each rallied for three-set victories, but they were Minnesota’s only winners in a 5-2 non-conference loss at San Diego State on Sunday.

Gallego came back to beat Juan Gomez 1-6, 7-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, while Dehn pulled out a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 win over Giovanni Vaglietti at No. 5 singles. The Aztecs won two other singles matches in three sets and took the doubles point to improve to 8-5 for the season. Minnesota has lost two straight matches to drop to 10-3 overall.

Ishay Hadash lost two heartbreaking matches in tiebreakers, dropping his No. 1 singles contest to Achim Ceban 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 and his No. 2 doubles match with Phillip Arndt by a score of 9-8. Tobias Wernet also fell in three sets at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 setback to Bartosz Golas and an 8-3 loss with Michael Sicora at No. 1 doubles.

Arndt dropped his No. 3 singles match to Andre Feliz 7-5, 6-3 and Dino Bilankov lost another tight match at No. 6 to Tim Schulz van Endert 7-6, 7-5. Gallego and Dehn were edged at No. 3 doubles by an 8-6 score.

The Gophers take on another Mountain West Conference opponent on Monday when they face Nevada-Las Vegas in San Diego.
