Wernet and Bilankov Help Gophers Bounce Back

Tobias Wernet and Dino Bilankov teamed to clinch the doubles point while also picking up singles victories as Minnesota defeated Nevada-Las Vegas 5-2 on Monday in San Diego.

The Gophers, ranked 27th in the country, had lost their previous two matches, but bounced back to improve to 11-3 for the season. Nevada-Las Vegas fell to 10-7 with the loss in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Wernet and Bilankov posted an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles after Sebastian Gallego and Julian Dehn had won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Wernet added a 6-2, 6-3 win over Mehdi Bouras at No. 2 singles, while Bilankov won 6-2, 6-3 over Attila Toth at No. 5. Ishay Hadash added a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Elliot Wronsky at No. 1 singles and Michael Sicora was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Nikolaj Wulff at No. 6 singles.

Gallego and Dehn both lost in singles with Gallego falling to Wesley Burrows 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 3 and Dehn slipping to Luca Barlocchi 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.

The Gophers return home Wednesday and open Big Ten play this weekend at home against Michigan on Saturday at noon.
