Win Streak Halted in 5-2 Loss at Washington

Minnesota’s eight-match winning streak came to an end in a 5-2 loss to Washington in a battle of top 25 teams on Friday in Seattle.
The 24th-ranked Gophers got singles victories from freshmen Phillip Arndt and Julian Dehn, but fell to 10-2 overall with the loss. Washington, ranked 22nd in the country, moved to 9-4 with the victory.
Dehn and Sebastian Gallego combined for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles, but the Huskies pulled out the other two doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Tobias Wernet and Michael Sicora fell to Derek Drabble and Martin Kildahl 8-4 at No. 2, while Ishay Hadash and Arndt were edged 8-6 by Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Patrik Fischer at No. 1.
In singles, Dehn evened the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ryo Sekiguchi at No. 6. However, the Huskies won the next four matches before Arndt delivered a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over Drabble at No. 4.
Hadash, ranked 48th in the nation, fell to Fischer 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1, while 46th-ranked Nedunchezhiyan defeated Wernet 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. Gallego battled to a third set supertiebreaker at No. 3 singles, but lost to Kildahl 6-7, 7-5, (10-3). Dino Bilankov had a five-match winning streak snapped in a 6-4, 6-4 setback to David Chu at No. 5.
The Gophers are off until Sun., March 15 when they play at San Diego State.
