The University of Minnesota women’s golf team carded a combined score of 14-over 298 on day 2 of the Rio Verde Invitational to move up into a tie for third place. The Gophers were tied for ninth at the start of the day after opening with a 312 on Mar.6.
The Gophers were able to make up shots on the leaders on Saturday thanks to all Minnesota players carding sub-80 scores, led by Samantha Sommers’ even-par round of 72. Teresa Puga and Courtney Massey each tallied 3-over par rounds of 75 while Mary Narzisi and Michele Edlin scored rounds of 76 and 78, respectively.
Edlin, a sophomore, shot an opening round 75 to lead the Gophers on Friday. Puga, also a sophomore, was the only other Minnesota player to break 80 on Friday, finishing with a 4-over par 76.
The University of Kansas holds a 20-shot lead over the University of Toledo and a 21-shot lead over Minnesota and Arkansas-Little Rock. Meghan Gockel of Kansas leads by two strokes over three players for medalist honors.
The third and final round of the Rio Verde Invitational is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. Central. The final round can be followed live on golfstat.com.
