Ishay Hadash and Sebastian Gallego each won in singles and doubles, but it wasn’t enough as Northwestern squeaked out a 4-3 victory over Minnesota on Saturday in Evanston, Ill.
The 33rd-ranked Gophers entered the day alone in third place in the Big Ten, but fell into a tie with a group of five teams, including Northwestern, that trailed by just one match entering the weekend. Minnesota is now 15-6 overall and 4-3 in the Big Ten, while the 48th-ranked Wildcats are 16-6 overall and also 4-3 in the league.
Hadash and Gallego teamed for an 8-4 victory over Marc Dwyer and Alex Sanborn at No. 1 doubles, but Northwestern bounced back to win the other two matches and take the doubles point. The Wildcats got an 8-1 win from Andrew McCarthy and Alex Thams over Michael Sicora and Phillip Arndt at No. 3 and an 8-4 victory from Joshua Graves and Tobias Reitz over Tobias Wernet and Julian Dehn at No. 2.
Gallego and Dehn put the Gophers up 2-1 with a pair of singles victories as Gallego cruised past Reitz 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 and Dehn delivered a 6-1, 6-4 win over Sanborn at No. 5.
The Wildcats regained the lead as Eric Spector got past Sicora 6-0, 7-6 at No. 6 and Thams defeated Wernet 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.
Hadash evened the match at 3-3 with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Dwyer at No. 1. However, the Wildcats’ Joshua Graves won the deciding match over Dino Bilankov at No. 4 singles, rallying from a third-set deficit for the win. Bilankov was up a break in the third set before Graves battled back to claim the last five games and take a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory.
